About Theerthamalai Temple
Theerthamalai is a hill in Harur taluk of Dharmapuri district, about 16 km north-east of Harur, topped by the Theerthagirishwarar Temple, a Shiva temple dating from around the 7th century. The name means "hill of holy waters": the hill has several theerthams, or sacred springs, that are said to flow all year even when the land around is dry. Legend says Rama shot an arrow into the rock here to bring out water for his worship, creating the Rama Theertham waterfall.
The temple is reached by a long climb up steep steps from the foot of the hill, where there is a second Shiva temple. From the top you look out over the plains of Dharmapuri district. Theerthamalai is about 100 km from Hogenakkal by road, so it is a separate trip rather than an add-on to a day at the falls.
