About Hogenakkal Falls

Hogenakkal Falls is where the Kaveri, crossing from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, spreads over a wide bed of dark carbonatite rock and breaks into many separate falls. The main falls drop about 20 m into a gorge, and the spray that rises from them gave the place its name, which means "smoking rocks" in Kannada. Its width and many channels have earned it the nickname "the Niagara of India".

On the Tamil Nadu side you can see the falls from a watchtower, from walkways along the rocks and from a short hanging bridge. The falls change a lot with the seasons: they are wide and roaring when Karnataka releases water, usually between July and September, and thin and rocky in April and May. A coracle ride gives you a closer view from below when rides are running.
