About the Melagiri Hills
The Melagiri Hills are a forested range of the Eastern Ghats that rise along the Kaveri on the Tamil Nadu side, between Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Their dry deciduous forests are home to Asian elephants, gaur, leopards, sloth bears and many birds, and they form an important elephant corridor between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Parts of the range are protected as wildlife sanctuaries.
For most visitors, the Melagiri Hills are the green backdrop to Hogenakkal rather than a place to walk into. You see them from the river, from the viewpoints near the falls and from the road as you drive in. Entering the forest needs Forest Department permission, and elephants can cross the roads at any time, so enjoy the hills from your vehicle and the riverside.
