Local tips

Do not come on a Friday, because the palace is closed.

Arrive at opening time to have the courtyards and pools nearly to yourself.

Walk here from Charminar through the Laad Bazaar lanes rather than taking a cab through the traffic.

Hold your phone steady in the Khilwat hall, which is dim, and skip the flash.

Leave time for the car garage at the far end, which many visitors miss.

Ask at the counter about camera rules before you bring out a large camera.

Have lunch afterwards at Hotel Shadab in Ghansi Bazaar, a short walk away.

Seat of the Nizams

Chowmahalla was the official palace of the Asaf Jahi Nizams, the rulers of Hyderabad State. Building began in the mid-18th century, and most of what you see was finished in the mid-19th century. The name comes from the four palaces around the southern courtyard, known as chau mahal. Here the Nizams held durbars, received governors and hosted ceremonies until the mid-20th century. The Nizam's family trust restored it, and it opened to the public in 2005. The restoration won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage award.

What to see

The Khilwat Mubarak is the grand durbar hall. It has a raised marble platform where the Nizam sat, and it is lit by tiered chandeliers of Belgian crystal. Side rooms display costumes, weapons, crockery and photographs from court life. The southern courtyard has long pools and fountains lined by the four palaces, with Mughal, Persian and European styles mixed together. The car garage holds vintage cars from the Nizams' collection, including a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.

Planning your visit

The palace is usually open from 10 am to 5 pm, and closed on Fridays. Allow about two hours. It is about a ten-minute walk from Charminar through the lanes off Laad Bazaar, so the two pair easily into one Old City morning. Check the camera rules at the ticket counter, as phone photos are generally fine but larger cameras may cost extra.
