Local tips
Get dropped at Gulzar Houz or Madina and walk in, as vehicles cannot reach the monument itself.
Arrive when the gates open for the quietest photos and the gentlest light.
Check at the counter whether the first floor is open before you queue, because access is sometimes closed.
Avoid Friday midday, when prayers at Mecca Masjid next door fill the whole square.
Bargain in Laad Bazaar, and check lac bangles for cracks before you pay.
Buy pearls only from established shops that give a written certificate.
Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket, as the bazaar lanes get very crowded.
The monument
Charminar was built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. It stood at the centre of his new city of Hyderabad, where the old trade roads crossed. Its four arches face the four directions, and a slender minaret rises from each corner, about 56 m high. The top floor holds a small mosque, which is why the structure faces west. Built of granite and lime mortar, it has become the symbol of the city.
Getting there
The streets around the monument are narrow and mostly closed to general traffic. Cabs and autos usually drop you near Madina, Gulzar Houz or the Laad Bazaar end, and you walk the last few minutes. There is little parking, so do not drive yourself. The square is busiest in the evening and at weekends, and Friday midday is heavy because of prayers at the neighbouring Mecca Masjid.
Inside and up
The ticket covers the ground level, and when open, a narrow stair to the first floor. From there you see down the four bazaar roads. The upper levels and minarets are closed to visitors, and even first-floor access is sometimes shut for repairs or crowd control. The steps are steep and cramped, so they are not great for anyone unsteady on stairs.
Around the square
Laad Bazaar runs west towards Chowmahalla Palace and is lined with lac bangle shops. Mecca Masjid is just to the southwest. Pearl sellers cluster along the road towards Pathergatti. For chai, Nimrah Cafe sits right by the monument.
