What to Wear in Hyderabad

Hyderabad is warm for most of the year, and much of your sightseeing is in old neighbourhoods with mosques and palaces. Light, loose cotton that covers shoulders and knees handles almost every day here.

Everyday sightseeing

Loose cotton is the answer for most of the year. A kurta with trousers or a light co-ord works for the Old City and for Golconda. Plain shirts and full-length trousers work just as well. Pale colours stay cooler under the Deccan sun and stand out against sandstone and whitewash in photos. Winter mornings from December to January can be fresh, so a light shawl or overshirt is enough. You will not need a heavy jacket.

Around Charminar and Mecca Masjid

The Old City is conservative. Covered shoulders and knees draw less attention in Laad Bazaar and are expected near Mecca Masjid. Women who want to step into the mosque courtyard should carry a scarf for their head. Everyone removes shoes at the entrance. Crowds press close in the bazaar lanes, so a cross-body bag is safer than a backpack.

Golconda and the tombs

The climb to Bala Hisar at Golconda Fort is uneven stone steps, often dusty and sometimes slippery. Wear trainers or sandals with a real grip, not flat fashion soles. Carry a cap and water for the afternoon. The Qutb Shahi Tombs have long gravel paths and little shade between the domes.

Traditional Hyderabadi dress

The khada dupatta is the Nizami-era bridal outfit: a kurta, churidar and a six-yard dupatta draped in a set way, worn with jadau jewellery. Tailors and shops around Charminar and Laad Bazaar sell and rent them for special occasions. The Nizami sherwani is the men's court dress and suits a palace portrait at Chowmahalla Palace. Both are heavy, so keep them for a short shoot rather than a day of walking.

Monsoon

From June to September, downpours arrive quickly and Old City lanes flood for an hour or two. Quick-dry fabric and waterproof sandals beat canvas shoes. Keep a small umbrella in your bag.

Questions

Hyderabad — FAQ

Do women need to cover their heads in Hyderabad?

Not on the street. A head covering is expected only if you enter a mosque such as Mecca Masjid or a dargah, so carrying a scarf is enough.

Can I wear shorts in Hyderabad?

In HITEC City, malls and around Hussain Sagar, yes. In the Old City and at mosques and temples, trousers or a long skirt draw far less attention and are expected inside religious places.

Where can I rent a khada dupatta or sherwani for photos?

Shops and tailors around Charminar and Laad Bazaar sell and rent khada dupatta sets, and Old City tailors make sherwanis. Rentals usually need a deposit and ID, so ask about both before choosing.

Do I need warm clothes for Hyderabad in winter?

Only a light layer. December and January nights are cool but mild, so a shawl, cardigan or light jacket covers early mornings and evenings.
