Good to know

Local tips

Do not plan this for a Friday, because the heritage park is closed.

Come in the late afternoon, when the domes turn gold and the paths are quiet.

Find Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah's tomb on its high terrace, as he built Charminar.

Look for the stepwell and the old mortuary bath, which most visitors walk past.

Wear a hat and carry water, since the garden paths have little shade.

Expect scaffolding on some tombs while restoration continues.

Pair it with Golconda Fort about 1 km away for sunset and the evening show.

The royal necropolis

The Qutb Shahi sultans ruled Golconda from 1518 to 1687, and most of them are buried here in Ibrahim Bagh, about 1 km north of the fort. Their tombs stand on raised platforms, each with an onion dome over a square chamber with arched walls. Queens, princes, courtiers and even royal physicians have smaller tombs among them. Several mosques, a stepwell and a mortuary bath where royal bodies were washed before burial complete the site.

A careful restoration

For years the tombs were weathered and overgrown. Since 2013, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Telangana heritage department have restored the domes, lime plaster and tile work, and replanted the gardens. The site is now run as the Qutb Shahi Heritage Park. The work is still going on in parts, so some tombs may be under scaffolding.

Visiting

The park is usually open from about 9:30 am to late afternoon and is closed on Fridays. It is far less crowded than Golconda. The paths are long and mostly unshaded, so a hat helps in the middle of the day. The largest tomb, that of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the builder of Charminar, stands on a high terrace you can walk around.

Pairing it

Come in the afternoon, walk the tombs as the light warms, and then drive the short distance to Golconda Fort for sunset and the evening show. If you have seen Charminar, look for its builder's tomb here.
