About Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh is a group of royal cenotaphs, called chhatris, about 6 km north of Jaisalmer. The name means "big garden". In the 16th century Jait Singh II built a dam here to create a water tank, and his son Lunkaran laid out a garden by the lake and built a memorial for him. Later rulers of Jaisalmer added their own chhatris over the following centuries.

Today rows of carved sandstone domes stand on a low hill, with the flat desert all around and modern wind turbines on the ridge behind. The site is quiet, open and has little shade, and it is best known as a place to watch the sun set over the desert.
