About Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer sits deep in the Thar Desert in western Rajasthan, close to the border with Pakistan. It grew up around Jaisalmer Fort, built by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 on Trikuta Hill, and was once a stop for camel caravans crossing the desert. The fort, the old town below it and the merchant havelis are all built from the same yellow sandstone, which is why Jaisalmer is called the Golden City.
The fort is still lived in, with homes, shops, Jain temples and guesthouses inside its walls, so a morning there feels more like walking through a small town than visiting a monument. Spend a second morning at Patwon Ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake, catch sunset at Bada Bagh or on the dunes at Sam, and make time for desert food like ker sangri, dal baati churma and ghotua ladoo. Most visitors come between October and March, when the days are warm and the nights are cold.
Questions
Jaisalmer — FAQ
What is Jaisalmer famous for?
Jaisalmer is famous for its living sandstone fort, the carved merchant havelis such as Patwon Ki Haveli, and the Sam Sand Dunes, where visitors go for camel rides, jeep safaris and desert camps. It is also known for Manganiyar folk music, mirror-work textiles and the Desert Festival held each winter.
How many days are enough for Jaisalmer?
2–3 days is enough for the fort, the havelis, Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh, plus one evening and night at the Sam dunes. Add a day if you want to see the abandoned village of Kuldhara or drive out to Tanot Mata near the border.
What is the best time to visit Jaisalmer?
October to March is the most comfortable time, with warm days and cold nights. April to June is very hot, often above 40 °C, and most desert camps close. See the best time to visit Jaisalmer for a month-by-month guide.
How do I reach Jaisalmer?
Jaisalmer has a railway station with direct trains from Jodhpur, Jaipur and Delhi, and Jodhpur is about 285 km away by road. The airport usually runs flights only in the winter season, roughly October to March, so check the schedule before you plan around it.
Can you stay overnight in the desert near Jaisalmer?
Yes. Many visitors spend a night in a tented camp near Sam or Khuri, with a camel or jeep ride at sunset, folk music and dinner under the stars. Most camps run from about October to March, and desert nights can get cold in winter, so carry a warm layer.
