About Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort, also called Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, was built by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 on Trikuta Hill. Its yellow sandstone walls, with 99 bastions, rise above the city and glow gold in the late afternoon. In 2013 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
It is one of the few forts in the world where people still live. Inside the walls are homes, shops, cafés, guesthouses, the royal palace museum, the Jain temples and Laxminath Temple, all linked by narrow, winding lanes. The fort's old foundations are sensitive to water seeping into the ground, so conservation groups ask visitors to use water carefully.
