About Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake is a man-made reservoir on the southern edge of Jaisalmer's old town. For centuries it was the city's main source of water, and it was rebuilt by Maharawal Gadsi Singh in the 14th century, which gave it its name. Stone ghats, small temples and chhatris line the banks, and some of them stand in the water.

Visitors enter through Tilon-ki-Pol, a carved sandstone gateway said to have been built by a courtesan named Tilon. The lake is calm and peaceful early in the morning, when you can take a boat out on the water. In winter, migratory birds gather on the lake and catfish crowd the ghats where people feed them.
