Local tips

Check with the forest department before going in the monsoon, when access is often restricted.

Use an SUV or a car with good ground clearance for the rough road to the summit.

Enter in the morning, when it is cooler and animals are more active.

Stay inside your vehicle and keep well back if you see an elephant.

Carry water and snacks, as there is little to buy inside the sanctuary.

Leave well before the gates close; do not stay in the forest after dark.

Stop at the Makulakocha interpretation centre to learn about the forest first.

The hills above the city

The Dalma hills rise north of Jamshedpur to around 3,000 feet, and much of the range is protected as the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. It is best known for wild elephants, which move through the sal forest and sometimes stray towards nearby villages. Deer, wild boar and many birds live here too.

Getting in

The main entrance is at Makulakocha, where there is a forest check post, an interpretation centre and a small deer enclosure. From there a rough road climbs towards the summit; SUVs and cars with good clearance manage it best. Entry is ticketed, vehicles pay separately, and the sanctuary usually opens from morning until late afternoon. Access is often restricted in the monsoon, when the road and trails turn muddy. Check with the forest department before you go.

At the top

Near the summit are a Shiva temple and a Hanuman shrine, and viewpoints look out over Jamshedpur, the Subarnarekha valley and Dimna Lake below. On Mahashivratri, many devotees make the climb to the temple.

Elephant safety

Elephant sightings are possible but never guaranteed. If you meet one, stay in your vehicle, keep your distance, switch off music and do not use flash. Never get out to take photographs or try to approach. Do not stay in the forest after the gates close.

Tips

Go in the morning, when it is cooler and animals are more active. Carry water and snacks. A local guide or forest staff member can help you understand the forest and stay safe.
