Local tips

Go on any day but Monday, when the zoo is closed for maintenance.

Arrive at opening, when animals are most active and the paths are cool.

Head to the safari first on busy days, as seats can run out.

Switch off flash and keep noise low near the enclosures.

Combine the zoo with Jubilee Park next door for a full day.

Carry water; stalls inside are limited.

Visit in winter for the most comfortable walk through the grounds.

The zoo

The Tata Steel Zoological Park sits beside Jubilee Park in the centre of Jamshedpur. It is one of the better-kept zoos in eastern India, with shaded paths, a lake and enclosures for tigers, leopards, deer, birds and more. It also works on conservation breeding and environmental education.

The safari

A safari area lets visitors ride through a larger enclosure where big cats move more freely than in standard cages. Seats are limited at busy times, so go early if you want a ride.

When to go

The zoo is closed on Mondays. On other days it usually opens mid-morning and closes around 5 pm; confirm timings before you go. Animals are most active in the first hour after opening and in the late afternoon. Winter is the most comfortable season; summer afternoons are hot.

Visiting with children

The paths are easy, there is plenty of shade, and the zoo combines with Jubilee Park next door for a full day out. Carry water.

Rules

Do not feed or tease animals, and do not use flash. Plastic is discouraged. Stay on marked paths and behind barriers, and keep children close at the railings.

Nearby

Jubilee Park is right next door, with its lawns, lake and evening laser show. Brubeck Bakery & Café in Bistupur, a short ride away, is a good place for coffee or lunch afterwards. If you have a second day, Dimna Lake and the Dalma hills to the north make a fine contrast to the zoo's managed spaces.
