What to Wear in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur is a relaxed, practical city, and dress follows. The weather matters more than etiquette, except at temples and on Dalma.

Everyday city wear

Jamshedpur is informal and cosmopolitan. Jeans, T-shirts, kurtas and casual dresses are all normal in Bistupur and around Jubilee Park. Evenings out in Bistupur's cafés are smart-casual at most.

By season

  • October to February: Pleasant days and cool evenings. December and January nights can be chilly, so bring a sweater or light jacket for evenings at Jubilee Park and early starts to Dimna.
  • March to June: Hot, and by May very hot at midday. Wear loose, light-coloured cotton, a cap and sunglasses. Plan outdoor visits for morning and evening.
  • July to September: Humid, with regular rain. Quick-dry clothes and a compact umbrella or rain jacket work best.

For Dalma and Dimna

The Dalma hills mean rough roads, forest trails and steps to the summit temple. Wear closed shoes with grip. In a sanctuary with elephants, dull colours — olive, khaki, brown — are better than bright ones, and you should keep noise down. For Dimna Lake, bring a cap and sunscreen; there is little shade by the water.

Temples

At Bhuvaneshwari and the Dalma summit temple, cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes. Sandals that slip off easily save time.

What to buy

Jharkhand is a leading tussar silk state. Kuchai tussar, from the Saraikela-Kharsawan area close to Jamshedpur, has a natural gold-brown sheen. Look for it at state handloom emporiums rather than street stalls, and check you are not being sold a machine-made imitation. You will also see the handwoven cotton textiles of the Santhal, Ho and Munda communities, worn at Sarhul and Karma. Wear them with respect, not as a costume.

Shopping areas

Bistupur has malls and brand stores. Sakchi is the older, busier market with better prices for everyday clothes.
