About Mandore Gardens

Mandore, about 9 km north of Jodhpur, was the capital of Marwar before Rao Jodha founded Jodhpur in 1459. Today it is a large garden with the cenotaphs, or devals, of the Marwar rulers. Unlike the usual domed memorials of Rajasthan, these are built in red sandstone like tall Hindu temples, several storeys high with carved spires.

The gardens also have the Hall of Heroes, with brightly painted figures of folk heroes and deities carved from the rock, along with old temples and terraces. Langurs roam the grounds, and local families come here to relax, so it feels less like a monument and more like a park.
