About Mehrangarh Fort
Mehrangarh Fort stands on a rocky hill about 120 m above Jodhpur and is one of the largest forts in India. Rao Jodha began building it in 1459, when he founded the city, and later rulers added to it over the next few centuries. You enter through a series of seven gates, and the fort's thick walls still show marks from old battles.
Inside are palaces with carved sandstone windows, including the Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, and a museum with palanquins, howdahs, weapons, paintings and textiles. From the ramparts, you look straight down on the blue houses of the old city, which is the view most visitors remember. The Chamunda Mata temple sits at the southern end of the fort, and the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park lies just below its walls.
