About Toorji ka Jhalra

Toorji ka Jhalra is a stepwell built around 1740, commissioned by a queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh. It was part of Jodhpur's old water system, when step wells stored rain water for the dry months. Built in the rose-red sandstone of the region, its steps drop down in neat, repeating flights towards the water.

For many decades the stepwell was filled with rubbish and forgotten. It was cleaned and restored in recent years, and it is now one of the most photographed spots in the old city. It lies a short walk from the Clock Tower, and the old buildings around it now hold cafés and shops.
