About Umaid Bhawan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace was built between 1929 and 1943 for Maharaja Umaid Singh, partly to give work to people during a long famine. It stands on Chittar Hill, away from the old city, and is built of golden-yellow sandstone in an Art Deco style with a large central dome. It is one of the largest private homes in the world.
The palace is split into three parts. The royal family still lives in one part and another is a hotel, and both are closed to the public. Visitors can see the museum, which covers the palace's history, with photographs, clocks, royal objects and a collection of vintage cars outside.
