About Linganamakki Dam

Linganamakki Dam was built across the Sharavathi river a few kilometres upstream of Jog Falls. It holds back one of the largest reservoirs in Karnataka and supplies water to the hydro power stations in the valley. That is why the falls are so thin in summer: most of the river is stored here.

When heavy monsoon rain fills the reservoir, the dam gates are opened and the falls swell to their fullest. The dam itself is a restricted area and photography is not allowed there, but the roads around the reservoir give wide views of water, islands and forested hills.
