About Sharavathi Valley
The Sharavathi valley is the forested river valley around Jog Falls, much of it protected as the Sharavathi Valley Lion-Tailed Macaque Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the most important homes of the endangered lion-tailed macaque, and its evergreen forests are also known for hornbills and other birds.
From roadside viewpoints you look down over deep green hills, the river and the reservoir. The best way to see the forest is on a guided trek, which usually needs forest department permission. During the monsoon the valley is at its greenest, but trails are wet, leeches are common and some areas may be closed.
