Good to know

Local tips

Aim to reach the top within an hour of sunrise, before cloud climbs out of the valleys.

Check the sky from your hotel first; if the ridge is in fog, go to Deolo later in the day.

Bring a warm layer even in spring, as the hilltop is windy and cooler than town.

Book paragliding only with a registered operator and expect flights to stop in bad weather.

Combine Deolo with Dr Graham's Homes on the slopes below in one morning.

Ask your taxi to wait at the top, as few cabs cruise the hill for return fares.

Carry cash for the small park fee and snacks at the stalls near the gate.

The top of town

Deolo is the higher of Kalimpong's two hills, at about 1,704 metres, rising to the north-east of the town. Its summit is a landscaped park with flower beds, lawns and paths, and the town's main water reservoirs sit on top. A small Hindu temple stands near the park, and the Kalimpong Science Centre is also on the hill. The park is ticketed, with a small fee.

The view

On a clear day Deolo shows almost everything around Kalimpong at once: the town strung along its ridge, the villages of the Relli valley, the Teesta in its gorge and the snow peaks of West Sikkim on the skyline. Kanchenjunga is the one people come for. It shows best in the early morning between October and December, and cloud usually rises from the valleys by late morning.

Paragliding

Tandem paragliding flights launch from the slopes near the top when the weather allows. Flights are ticketed and short, and they stop in rain, strong wind or low cloud. Use a registered operator, ask about the pilot's experience, and wear shoes that stay on.

Getting there

Deolo is about 6 km by road from the town centre. Taxis wait in town and will usually wait at the top while you walk round. Dr Graham's Homes is on the slopes below, so the two fit well into one morning. A state-run tourist lodge stands near the summit if you want to be there at first light.

When to come

Go early. The first hour of daylight is the best chance of a clear view and the quietest time in the park. Weekends and holidays bring local families and picnic groups by midday.
