A school with a history
Dr Graham's Homes was founded on 24 September 1900 by Rev. John Anderson Graham, a Church of Scotland missionary who had come to Kalimpong in 1889. It opened in a rented cottage with six children as St Andrew's Colonial Homes, a home and school for Anglo-Indian children who had been left without support. It grew fast. By the 1920s it housed about 600 children, with its own farm, hospital and gymnasium, and it took the founder's name in 1947.
The cottages and the chapel
Children lived in cottages named after the people who paid for them, and many of the stone cottages still stand across the slope. The Katherine Graham Memorial Chapel, finished in 1925, was built in memory of Graham's wife. Graham died in 1942 and is buried in the Garden of Remembrance on the campus, beside her.
Famous students
The school's former pupils include two prime ministers of Bhutan, Jigmi Thinley and Tshering Tobgay, and the Bollywood cinematographer Binod Pradhan.
Visiting a working school
This is a living school, not a museum. Children live here in term time. Stay on the roads and open paths, keep noise down, and do not photograph students. The chapel is the main sight, and access to the inside depends on the school, so ask at the gate if you want to go in.
Getting there
The campus is on the slopes below Deolo Hill, a few kilometres above the town centre. Most people pass through on the road to Deolo, and the two fit easily into one morning.
