Best time to visit Kanyakumari

The best time to visit Kanyakumari is from January to March, when the days are dry and warm, the skies are clear for sunrise and the sea is usually calm enough for the ferry to the rock memorials.

Kanyakumari is different from most of Tamil Nadu because it gets rain from both monsoons. The southwest monsoon brings passing showers from June to September, and the northeast monsoon brings heavier rain from October to December. Rough seas in either season can stop the ferry.

Best Month to Visit Kanyakumari

January to March

The best months of the year. The rain has cleared, the days are warm and sunny, and sunrise and sunset over the sea are most likely to be clear. The ferry usually runs smoothly, though January is still busy with pilgrims.

April and May

Hot and humid, with strong sun on the shore. Go out early and late, and rest in the middle of the day. The Chithra Pournami full moon, usually in April or May, draws crowds to watch the sunset and moonrise together.

June to September

The southwest monsoon brings cloudy skies, wind and passing showers rather than all-day rain. The sea can be rough, and the ferry may stop on some days. It is a quieter time, with lower crowds.

October to December

The northeast monsoon brings the heaviest rain of the year, often in the afternoon and evening. Sunrises are often hidden by cloud, and the ferry may be suspended in rough weather. From November, Sabarimala pilgrims start arriving in large numbers.

When Is Kanyakumari Most Crowded?

Kanyakumari is busiest from November to January, when Sabarimala pilgrims visit on their way to or from Kerala, and around Christmas, New Year and school holidays. Long weekends and festival days like Chithra Pournami and Navaratri also bring big crowds, with long queues for the ferry.

For a quieter trip, visit in February or March, and take the first ferry of the day.
