About the Thiruvalluvar Statue
The Thiruvalluvar Statue is a 133-foot stone statue of the Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, author of the Thirukkural. It stands on a small rocky island next to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and was unveiled on 1 January 2000. Its height has a meaning: the Thirukkural has 133 chapters, and the 38-foot pedestal stands for the 38 chapters of its first book, on virtue.
You reach the statue by the same ferry that goes to the rock memorial. Since the end of 2024, a glass bridge over the sea links the two islands, so you can walk from one to the other. From the shore, the statue rising out of the water is one of the most recognisable sights in Tamil Nadu.
