About Vattakottai Fort
Vattakottai Fort is a small granite fort on the sea, about 7 km north of Kanyakumari. Its name means "circular fort". It was built in the 18th century by the kingdom of Travancore to guard the coast, and Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, a Dutch naval officer who later led the Travancore army, oversaw work on it.
The fort is much quieter than the cape. You can walk along the ramparts, look out over the sea on one side and the hills of the Western Ghats on the other, and walk down to the small beach below the walls. It makes a calm afternoon trip after a busy morning in town.
