About the Vivekananda Rock Memorial
The Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands on a rocky island about 500 m off the Kanyakumari shore. Swami Vivekananda is said to have swum out to this rock and meditated here for three days in December 1892, before his journey to the West. The memorial was built in 1970 and has two main halls: the Vivekananda Mandapam and the Shripada Mandapam, which holds what is believed to be the footprint of the goddess Kanya Kumari.
You reach the rock by a short ferry ride from the town jetty. There is a quiet meditation hall, open space to walk around, and wide views of the sea and the shore. A glass bridge now links the rock to the Thiruvalluvar Statue on the next island.
