Best time to visit Kausani

In Kausani the question is not only the weather but whether you will see the mountains. The answer changes a lot from month to month.

❄️ Winter

Recommended

Oct – Mar

October and November are clear, crisp and dry — the best mountain views of the year; December to February turns cold, with snow on the higher ground, enough in places to close roads.

Pack: warm layers and a jacket for October–November; thermals, gloves and a woollen cap from December.

October and November: the clearest months

After the monsoon rain clears the dust, the air is at its cleanest. Most mornings show the whole range, from Trishul and Nanda Devi to Panchachuli, and many evenings do too. Days are sunny and pleasant; nights get cold by November. If you can choose only one month, choose October.

December to February: cold and often clear

Winter mornings are frosty, and nights can drop close to freezing. Clear days are still common, and the snow on the peaks is at its fullest. Kausani itself gets only occasional snow, usually in January or February, and some winters see very little. When it does snow, roads down the ridge can be slippery for a day or two.

March to June: pleasant but hazy

Rhododendrons flower on the slopes in spring, and days are comfortable for walking. The catch is haze. Dust and forest-fire smoke often blur the peaks from April onwards, and some days you will not see them at all. Early mornings give the best chance. This is also the busiest season, with families escaping the heat of the plains.

July to September: monsoon

Clouds usually hide the range for weeks at a time. It rains most days, the valleys turn deep green, and Rudradhari Falls runs strongly. Hill roads, including the route from Kathgodam through Almora, can be blocked by landslides after heavy rain. Build spare time into any trip, and check road news before you drive.

So when should you go?

For the mountain view, go between October and February, with October and November the safest bet. For mild weather and flowers, accept some haze and go in March or April. For quiet green hills, go at the end of September, when crowds are thin and the first clear days return. See what's on in Kausani for festivals nearby.
