What to Wear in Kaziranga

Safari clothes here are about three things: colours the animals will not notice, layers for cold mornings, and a scarf for the dust. Everything else is comfort.

Colours

Wear khaki, olive, brown, grey or dull green. Bright colours stand out in the grass and white reflects light, and both can make animals wary. Forest staff and elephant handlers appreciate quiet colours, and your photos will look better too. Skip strong perfume and noisy fabrics that rustle.

The dawn chill

An open jeep at 7 am in December or January is colder than most people expect. Temperatures on the grassland drop close to single figures, and the wind on a moving jeep makes it feel colder. Wear a fleece or light down jacket over a long-sleeved top, and bring a woolly hat and gloves for the elephant ride, which starts before sunrise. By mid-morning you will peel off layers, so a small backpack helps.

Dust and sun

The tracks are dry and dusty from November to April. A cotton scarf or buff over your nose and mouth makes a big difference, especially in the back of the jeep. Sunglasses keep grit out of your eyes. The afternoon sun is strong in March and April, so a cap and sunscreen are worth packing.

Shoes

Closed shoes or trail shoes are best. You will climb into jeeps, up watchtower steps and onto elephant mounting platforms. Sandals are fine around the resort.

Insects

Mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, especially near water. Long sleeves and repellent help, and lodges usually provide nets or screens.

Evenings and local dress

Resort evenings are casual. If you visit a village or attend a cultural show, the mekhela chador and the gamosa are the local traditional wear. A gamosa is often given as a welcome; wear it around your neck and treat it with respect.

Where to buy

Kohora market has basic caps, scarves and gamosas. Bring proper warm layers from home or Guwahati, as choice near the park is limited.

Questions

Kaziranga — FAQ

How cold does it get on a Kaziranga safari?

In December and January, early morning safaris can feel very cold in an open jeep, often below 10°C with wind chill. By late morning it warms up quickly. Layers are the answer.

Why should I avoid white on a safari?

White and bright colours stand out against the grass and can make animals nervous. Muted khaki, olive and grey blend in and are also less likely to show dust.

Do I need special shoes for Kaziranga?

No hiking boots needed, since you stay in the jeep. Closed trainers or trail shoes are enough for climbing into vehicles and up watchtower steps.

What should I wear for the elephant safari?

Warm layers, a hat and gloves in winter, as it starts before sunrise. Wear trousers rather than a skirt, because you sit astride or sideways on a padded seat on the elephant.
