About Kandariya Mahadeva Temple

Kandariya Mahadeva is the largest and tallest temple at Khajuraho. It was built in the first half of the 11th century, during the reign of the Chandela king Vidyadhara, and is dedicated to Shiva, whose lingam stands in the sanctum. The temple sits on a platform about 4 m high, and its tower rises about 31 m above it. The tower is built up from 84 smaller spires, an outline meant to suggest the peaks of Mount Kailash, Shiva's home in the Himalayas.

The walls carry more than 870 carved figures, most of them about half life size: gods and goddesses, celestial women, musicians, dancers, mythical animals and a number of erotic panels. Steep steps lead up into the temple, where passages run around the sanctum. It shares its platform with Devi Jagadambi Temple, and in recent years the Khajuraho Dance Festival stage has been set up close by.
