About Matangeshwara Temple

Matangeshwara Temple is the only one of Khajuraho's old Hindu temples still in daily worship. It stands next to the Lakshmana Temple, just outside the fenced Western Group, and is usually dated to the early 10th century, around 900 to 925. Its square, plain design is very different from its neighbours: the walls and tower carry almost no sculpture.

Inside is a polished Shiva lingam about 2.5 m high and more than 1 m across, set on a round platform. Local people come to pray here every day, and the temple is at its busiest at Mahashivratri, when a three-day celebration marks the wedding of Shiva and Parvati and the lingam is dressed like a bridegroom. Visit as you would any working temple, with modest clothes and quiet respect.
