Shines now: Rankala Lake
Plan a monsoon day →October to February
This is the comfortable season. Days are warm and dry, usually in the high 20s to low 30s °C, and early mornings can dip into the teens. It is the best time for the long walk round Panhala's ramparts and for sunsets at Rankala Lake. October often starts with Navratri at the Ambabai temple and the royal Dussehra, so the city is full and busy. Late October and November bring green hills left by the rain, and the November Kirnotsav at the temple.
March to May
Kolhapur is milder than much of the Deccan in summer. Afternoons usually reach 33 to 35 °C and rarely much more, but the sun is strong and the air gets humid towards May. Sightseeing is fine in the early morning and the evening. The Jyotiba fair at the Chaitra full moon usually falls in late March or April and draws huge crowds.
June to September
The Western Ghats are close, and the monsoon here is heavy from June. The hills around Panhala and Jyotiba turn bright green and often sit in cloud, which is lovely but wet. In town, the Panchganga river can flood in a big year, as it did in 2019 and 2021. Roads up the hills get slippery, and views from the forts may disappear in fog. If you come now, pack proper rain gear and keep plans flexible. Ganesh Chaturthi in August or September brings pandals and processions to the city too.
Which month is best?
For weather, November to February. For festivals, come for Navratri, usually in September or October, if you can handle crowds and book ahead. For green landscapes with less rain, try late September or early October.
Questions
Kolhapur — FAQ
Does Kolhapur get very hot in summer?
Less than most of inland Maharashtra. Summer highs are usually around 33 to 35 °C, but the sun is strong and May feels humid. Plan outdoor visits for mornings and evenings.
Is it worth visiting Kolhapur in the monsoon?
Yes, if you want green hills and do not mind heavy rain. The forts and hills look their best, but views can vanish in cloud and river flooding is possible in a bad year.
When is Kolhapur most crowded?
During Navratri and Dussehra, usually in September or October, when pilgrims fill the Ambabai temple, and at the Jyotiba fair in March or April. Book rooms early for both.
