Local tips
Hire a car or taxi from Kolhapur, as the road climbs about 20 km and buses are slow.
Walk the ramparts in the early morning, before the day trippers and the heat.
Take a local guide at Andhar Bavadi or Teen Darwaza if you want the siege story in detail.
Wear shoes with grip, because the stone paths and steps get slippery in the rain.
Keep children away from the wall edges, as there are no railings in many places.
Combine the trip with Jyotiba, which is in the same direction from the city.
Carry water and snacks, since stalls are fewer away from the main sights.
A fort as big as a town
Panhala stands about 20 km north-west of Kolhapur, at about 845 m above sea level, looking over a pass in the Western Ghats. It is one of the largest forts in the Deccan, with a perimeter of about 14 km and more than 7 km of walls. A small hill town has grown up inside it, with homes, hotels and schools, so you drive straight in.
History
The fort was first built around 1178 to 1209 by the Shilahara king Bhoja II, then strengthened by the Bijapur sultans, who added many of the gates and walls. Shivaji took it in 1659. In 1660 he was besieged here for months, and on the night of 13 July he slipped out towards Vishalgad while Baji Prabhu Deshpande held off the pursuers at Pavankhind. Later, Tarabai ruled from Panhala before the capital moved to Kolhapur in 1782. In 2025 Panhala became one of the twelve forts listed by UNESCO as the Maratha Military Landscapes of India.
What to see
Andhar Bavadi, the hidden well, is a three-storey building that conceals the fort's main water source. The Ambarkhana is a group of large granaries that helped the fort survive long sieges. Teen Darwaza is the main double gateway, with carvings and Persian inscriptions from 1534. Sajja Kothi is a pavilion built out over the walls to watch the valley.
Visiting
The ramparts are wide open, with long drops in places, so keep children close. The monsoon brings mist and green hills but also slippery stone. Local guides usually wait near the main sights and can explain the siege story well.
