Kolhapur's evening place
Rankala is the big lake on the west side of old Kolhapur, a short walk from the Ambabai temple. Every evening the city comes here to walk, eat and watch the sun go down over the water. It costs nothing, and it is one of the easiest ways to see local life.
How it came to be
The site was once a quarry for black stone. Local tradition says an earthquake in the 9th century opened springs that filled it with water. The lake was later shaped and landscaped by the rulers of Kolhapur.
What to look for
A small temple to Rankabhairav stands on an island in the lake. Sandhya Math, an old stone pavilion, sits in the water and is mostly underwater in the monsoon. There is a large Nandi on the bank, and a tower at Rajghat, one of the two places where steps lead down to the water. Shalini Palace, built of black stone for the royal family and later used as a hotel, stands on the far shore.
Padpath and the chowpatty
The paved lakeside walk, the Padpath, is best in the last hour of daylight. The chowpatty area near the city side has stalls selling bhel, pani puri, corn and ice cream. Horse rides and boating are usually on offer in the evening; hours vary, so ask at the jetty.
Tips
Weekends and holidays are crowded. For a quieter lake, come early in the morning, when walkers and joggers have it to themselves and the water is often still.
