Where to Eat in Konark

Konark's food is simple and close at hand. These four places cover a temple-side lunch, a sit-down dinner, fish by the sea and sweets for the road.

Not sure what to order? The Konark food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.

Geetanjali Restaurant

A short walk from the Sun Temple gate. It serves Odia thalis at lunchtime with dalma, fish curry and seasonal vegetables, and it gets busy when tour groups arrive around noon. Go at 12 or after 2 to avoid the rush.

Sun Temple Hotel Restaurant

A hotel restaurant with a longer menu of Odia, north Indian and Chinese dishes. It is the easiest choice for a group with mixed tastes and one of the few places open for a sit-down dinner. It is near the ASI museum.

Chandrabhaga Beach Shacks

A row of simple shacks at Chandrabhaga beach, about 3 km from the temple. Fish curry, fried fish, prawns and snacks, eaten at plastic tables with the sea in front of you. Standards vary from shack to shack; pick one that is busy with local families. Best at lunch or in the early evening.

Odia Sweet House

A sweet shop near the temple for chhena poda, khaja and other Odia sweets. Useful for a snack after the temple and for a box to take away. Fully vegetarian.

Where they are

Three of the four are in the village near the temple. The beach shacks are a short auto ride east. If you are staying at Chandrabhaga, you can walk to the shacks for dinner.

Tips

  • Carry cash for the shacks and sweet shop, though digital payment is common in town.
  • Lunch is the main meal; the thali is freshest between noon and 2 pm.
  • During the Konark Festival in early December, restaurants fill fast in the evening. Eat before the performance.
