What's on in Konark
Konark's calendar is short but strong: a week of dance and sand art in December and a dawn pilgrimage to the sea in late winter. Both use the town's two big settings, the temple and the beach.
Nothing dated is confirmed for Konark right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.
The year in Konark
Konark's calendar works around the monsoon — the big outdoor events sit either side of it, and the wettest weeks are the quietest ones for anything held in the open. Broadly, Oct – Mar is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.
Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Konark Festival (1 to 5 December)
Every year from 1 to 5 December, Odisha Tourism stages five evenings of classical dance at an open-air auditorium facing the Sun Temple. Odissi is at the centre, with Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and other forms on the programme. The lit temple forms the backdrop. Seats fill early; arrive well before the start and bring a shawl for the sea breeze.
International Sand Art Festival (same week)
Alongside the dance festival, sand artists from India and abroad build sculptures on Chandrabhaga beach, about 2 to 3 km from the temple. It runs through the day, so you can walk the beach in the morning and see the dance at night. Themes change daily.
Chandrabhaga Mela (Magha Saptami)
On Magha Saptami, the seventh day of the bright half of Magha, which falls in January or February, pilgrims gather at Chandrabhaga beach before dawn. They bathe in the sea and face the sunrise to worship Surya. Tradition links the day to Samba, a son of Krishna, who was said to be cured of leprosy here by worshipping the sun. Expect huge crowds, traffic restrictions on the Marine Drive and a fair along the shore. In 2026 it fell on 25 January.
