Local tips

Go early in the morning to see the boats come in and the fish being sold.

Ask before photographing people, and respect it if they say no.

Stay out of the way of workers carrying fish and nets.

Wear closed shoes or sandals with a grip, as the harbour floor is wet and slippery.

Dress modestly, as this is a working village, not a beach resort.

Visit the rock-cut cave temple nearby, which takes only a few minutes.

Do not try to enter the new seaport, which is a restricted industrial area.

About Vizhinjam

Vizhinjam is a fishing village and harbour about 3 km south of Kovalam. Its sheltered bay is packed with brightly painted boats, and the fish landing and market are at their busiest when the boats come in. It was an important port in ancient times, and a small rock-cut cave shrine from around the 8th century, with a carving of Shiva as Dakshinamurthy, still stands in the village.

Next to the old harbour is the new Vizhinjam International Seaport, a deep-water container port that began commercial operations in December 2024. It is a working industrial port, not a place for visitors, but its cranes and large ships are visible from the coast. Visit the fishing harbour with respect, as it is a busy workplace and a home for the people who live there.
