About Kovalam
Kovalam is a beach town on the Arabian Sea, about 16 km south of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. Its shore is split by rocky headlands into three curved beaches: Lighthouse Beach in the south, below the red-and-white Vizhinjam Lighthouse, Hawah Beach in the middle and the quieter Samudra Beach to the north. Coconut palms run down to the sand, fishermen still launch their boats from the beach at dawn, and cafés and seafood shacks line the promenade.
Most visitors come to slow down. Mornings are for a walk on the sand and the fishing boats, afternoons for the lighthouse climb or a trip to the busy harbour at Vizhinjam, and evenings for sunset and grilled seafood by the water. Kovalam is also one of Kerala's best-known places for Ayurvedic massage and yoga, and it makes an easy base for Thiruvananthapuram's temples, museums and markets.
Questions
Kovalam — FAQ
What is Kovalam famous for?
Kovalam is famous for its three crescent beaches, the striped Vizhinjam Lighthouse above Lighthouse Beach, fresh seafood and Ayurvedic massage and yoga. It is one of the best-known beach towns in Kerala.
How many days are enough for Kovalam?
2–3 days is enough for the three beaches, the lighthouse and Vizhinjam harbour. Add a day if you want to see Thiruvananthapuram, or stay longer if you are booking a course of Ayurvedic treatments.
What is the best time to visit Kovalam?
October to March is the most comfortable time, with calmer seas and dry, sunny days. From June to September the monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas, and swimming is often stopped. See the best time to visit Kovalam for a month-by-month guide.
How do I reach Kovalam?
The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, roughly 15 km away. Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station is about 16 km away. From either, a taxi or auto-rickshaw to Kovalam takes around 30–45 minutes, and local buses also run from the city.
Is it safe to swim at Kovalam?
Only in the zones marked by lifeguards, and only when they allow it. Kovalam has strong undercurrents even when the sea looks calm, and during the monsoon lifeguards usually stop swimming altogether. Follow the flags and whistles, and do not swim after dark or after drinking.
