Best time to visit Lachung
The two best windows for Lachung are spring, from April to May, and autumn, from October to November. Winter brings deep snow and road closures higher up, and the monsoon brings landslides.
❄️ Winter
RecommendedOct – Mar
Cold, with snow on the higher ground and some high passes and roads closed — beautiful, but pack and plan for it.
Pack: heavy insulated layers, gloves, a warm hat and waterproof boots.
Shines now: Yumthang Valley, Zero Point
Plan a winter day →☀️ Summer
RecommendedApr – Jun
The prime window — comfortable days and the higher roads open again, though pre-monsoon haze can hide the far peaks by May and June.
Pack: light layers by day and a warm jacket for cool evenings and altitude.
Shines now: Yumthang Valley, Zero Point
Plan a summer day →🌧️ Monsoon
Jul – Sep
Lush and green but wet, with a real risk of landslides and roadblocks on mountain routes.
Pack: a waterproof shell, quick-dry layers and sturdy, grippy footwear.
Plan a monsoon day →April and May: flowers and snow
Spring is the most popular season. The rhododendrons around Yumthang usually flower from late April to mid-May, with primulas on the meadows, and snow still lies higher up at Zero Point. Days in the village are mild, but mornings in the valley are cold. It is also the busiest time, so book the package early. By late May haze and afternoon cloud become more common.
June to September: monsoon
This is the wettest stretch of the year, with most rain in July and August. Landslides are frequent on the road from Gangtok, and roads can close for days. In 2025 North Sikkim was closed to tourists for about four months after monsoon landslides. The valleys are green and Yumthang has summer flowers, but go only with a flexible plan and a spare day.
October and November: clear skies
After the rains the air clears, and the peaks are often sharp from early morning. The maples and larches turn yellow and red in October. It is dry and cold, with nights near freezing by November. This is the best time for clear views and the most reliable roads.
December to March: snow
January nights fall to around −10°C, and the village is often under snow. Snow can stop vehicles short of Yumthang, and Zero Point is often closed. Some visitors come especially to see snow, but trips are more often cut short. Spring starts in late March, when the first flowers appear lower down.
Planning around the calendar
Losoong, the Sikkimese new year, falls in December, and the monastery's annual masked dance follows the lunar calendar. See events and festivals for what else happens during the year.
Whatever the month
Leave Lachung before dawn for Yumthang, as cloud usually builds by late morning. Ask your operator about the road and permits a day or two before you set off.
