Where to Eat in Lamayuru
Lamayuru has no restaurant strip. You eat at your homestay or guesthouse, at a small café near the monastery, or at a dhaba on the highway where the buses and trucks stop.

Lamayuru village
Not sure what to order? The Lamayuru food guide starts from the dishes — what each one is, when to eat it, and which of these kitchens is known for it.
Your homestay is your best kitchen
Most guesthouses and homestays in the village cook for guests, and this is where Ladakhi food is at its best. Breakfast is often bread, eggs, jam and butter tea; dinner may be dal and rice, thukpa or skyu. Tell your host what you want to eat and when, especially if you want a local dish, as it may need hours on the stove. Meals are usually eaten early.
Cafés near the monastery
A few small cafés sit on the lane up to the gompa, serving momos, noodles, tea and coffee. They suit a quick lunch between the monastery and a walk on the moonland. Opening hours depend on the season, and several close for the winter.
Highway dhabas
The dhabas along the highway exist for truckers and bus passengers, so they are quick and cheap. Expect thukpa, tingmo with stew, rice, dal, Maggi and endless chai. The food is simple but hot and freshly made. If you are driving from Srinagar or Leh, this is where the drivers eat, and they know which kitchens are good.
Timing and cash
In the main season, from May to September, food is easy to find from breakfast to an early dinner. Outside it, several places shut, and you rely on your guesthouse. Carry cash in small notes, as card machines and phone signal come and go. Tap water should be boiled or filtered; carry a bottle you can refill rather than buying plastic.
Manners at the table
When a host offers butter tea, accept a cup. It will be refilled as soon as you drink, so leave some in the cup when you have had enough. Eat what you take. Food carries a long way up here, and wasting it is noticed.
