Local tips

Put on a warm layer before stepping out, as the wind on the pass is cold all year.

Park well off the road, since army convoys and trucks use this highway.

Walk slowly on the pass, because at over 4,000 m you tire quickly.

Keep the stop short if you have come straight up from Srinagar without acclimatising.

Leave prayer flags where they hang, and walk clockwise around the chorten.

Check the road status in Leh or Kargil before crossing between December and March.

Carry snacks and water, as there is no shop or café on the pass.

The highest point on the road

Fotu La is a mountain pass at about 4,108 m in the Zanskar range, roughly 15 km west of Lamayuru. It is the highest point on the Srinagar–Leh highway, higher than the better-known Zoji La. Heading east, the road drops from the pass towards Lamayuru; heading west, it crosses the lower Namika La on the way to Kargil.

What is at the top

The pass itself is a broad saddle with prayer flags strung across it, a small chorten and a television relay mast. There is no village or shop. The reason to stop is the view: bare brown ranges in every direction, with snow on the higher peaks in early summer. It works as a ten-minute photo stop on the way between Kargil and Lamayuru.

At altitude

At over 4,000 m the air is noticeably thin. Walk slowly, do not run up the slopes for a better angle, and do not linger if you feel a headache. If you are coming from Srinagar and have not slept at altitude, keep the stop short. Children and older travellers feel it more.

Weather and road

The wind is strong and cold on the pass even on sunny summer days, so put on a warm layer before you get out of the car. In winter heavy snow can block Fotu La, especially in January and February; the army clears the road as soon as the weather allows. Check the road status in Leh or Kargil before crossing in the cold months. Trucks and army convoys use this road, so park well off the tarmac.
