What to Wear in Lepakshi

Lepakshi is a working temple as well as a monument, and you tour most of it barefoot on granite. Dress for respect, sun and hot stone, in that order.

Dress for a working temple

The Veerabhadra Temple is still a place of daily worship, and families come to pray while visitors look at the carvings. Covered shoulders and knees are the norm for everyone. Loose trousers, a long skirt or a kurta work well. A cotton stole is useful to cover up quickly. Devotees at pujas and festivals wear traditional dress: sarees and salwar kameez for women, and a white panche (dhoti) with an upper cloth for men. Visitors are not expected to match that, but shorts and sleeveless tops will look out of place.

Bare feet on granite

Shoes come off at the entrance, and you walk the halls and the open rock barefoot. The granite is cool at opening time. By late morning in the hot months, the exposed stone between the halls can be too hot to stand on comfortably. Arrive early, and wear slip-on sandals you can leave at the shoe stand without fuss.

Sun and dust

The Nandi sits in the open, and the outer rock around the temple has almost no shade. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen matter from March to May. Pale cotton or linen is cooler than dark or synthetic fabric. Carry water, as the dry Rayalaseema air dehydrates you faster than it feels.

Through the year

  • October to February: warm days and mild mornings. A light layer is enough for an early start; you will not need heavy woollens.
  • March to June: very hot at midday. Wear the loosest cotton you have and plan the visit for early morning or late afternoon.
  • July to September: showers come and go. Wet granite is slippery, so walk carefully on the rock.

The local silk

The traditional wear on this page includes the Dharmavaram silk saree. Dharmavaram is a silk-weaving town in the same district, known for heavy silks with broad gold borders. They are worn at Telugu weddings. If you want one, buy it in Dharmavaram or from a trusted shop. Be wary of cheap power-loom copies sold as handloom.
