October to February: clear and cool

After the rains the plateau is green, the air is clean and the valley views are at their sharpest. Mornings are chilly and evenings need a sweater. From December the strawberry farms start picking, and January and February are the prime months for fresh fruit. This is the high season, so book early for Diwali and for Christmas to New Year.

March to May: warm days, cool nights

Days warm up, but the plateau stays much cooler than Pune or Mumbai. Haze can soften the views by midday, so do the viewpoints early. The Strawberry Festival at Mapro Garden generally falls around March or April. May is crowded with families on school holidays, and weekends then are the busiest of the year.

Mid-June to September: the monsoon

The rain usually arrives in the second week of June and is very heavy. In July it can fall for ten days or more without a break, and the town is often in cloud. Fog hides the valleys, paths and roads get slippery, and landslides can close ghat roads for a while. Boating at Venna Lake is often stopped, many strawberry farms close and some hotels shut until the rains ease. What you get in return is empty roads, full waterfalls and the plateau at its greenest. Do not climb past barriers at the viewpoints.

Weekdays or weekends

The town fills up from Friday evening to Sunday with visitors from Pune and Mumbai. The market, the lake and the car parks at the viewpoints are far calmer from Monday to Thursday. If you can only come at the weekend, start your viewpoint drive at first light.

The short answer

For views and pleasant weather, go between October and February. For strawberries, go between December and March. For rain and waterfalls, go in the monsoon, but plan for closures.
