Where to Eat in Mahabaleshwar
A plateau town above two valleys
Mahabaleshwar sits on a flat-topped spur of the Sahyadri range in Satara district, at about 1,350 m and roughly 120 km south-west of Pune. The British took over the area in 1828 and built it up as a hill station, and for much of the colonial period it served as the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. Old records even call it Malcolm Peth, after a governor. Today it is the weekend escape for Pune and Mumbai: a crowded main market, a lake, a ring of cliff-edge viewpoints and strawberry fields on almost every spare slope.
How a visit splits up
Most trips fall into three parts. The first is the town itself, with the market and Venna Lake about 2 km away. The second is the chain of viewpoints on the rim of the plateau, led by Arthur's Seat, about 12 km by road. The third is the older places beyond: the temple village of Old Mahabaleshwar, where the Krishna river is said to rise, and Pratapgad Fort, about 24 km west down a winding ghat road. Mapro Garden sits on the Panchgani road at Gureghar. Two full days covers all of it without rushing.
The weather decides everything
October to May is when the viewpoints do their job. From about the second week of June the monsoon arrives, and it is one of the heaviest anywhere in India, with days of unbroken rain in July. Fog wipes out the views, paths get slippery, boating on the lake stops and many farms and some hotels close until the rains ease. Come in the monsoon for waterfalls and cloud, not for panoramas. The best time to visit page has the month-by-month detail.
Strawberries and the market
Mahabaleshwar and nearby Panchgani grow about 85 per cent of India's strawberries, and the fruit has had a GI tag since 2010. The picking season runs roughly from December to March. Stalls around the lake and the market sell strawberries and cream, crushes and shakes, and the market lanes fill up in the evening with corn patties and vada pav. See what to eat and where to eat.
History within a short drive
Pratapgad was built for Shivaji in 1656, and on 10 November 1659 its slopes saw his meeting with the Bijapur general Afzal Khan, one of the best-known episodes in Maratha history. Old Mahabaleshwar holds a 16th-century Shiva temple and the Panchganga shrine, where five rivers are said to begin.
Getting there
There is no railway station or airport in town. The nearest station is Satara, about 60 km away, and the nearest airport is Pune, about 120 km. Most people drive up via Wai or Panchgani. Weekend traffic on the ghat roads and in the market can be slow, so start early on Saturdays and leave early on Sundays.
Questions
Mahabaleshwar — FAQ
Is this the same Mahabaleshwar as the temple town near Gokarna?
No. This Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in Satara district, Maharashtra. The famous Mahabaleshwar temple at Gokarna is on the Karnataka coast, several hundred kilometres south.
Is Mahabaleshwar worth visiting in the monsoon?
Only if you want rain, cloud and waterfalls. From mid-June to September the rain is very heavy, the viewpoints are usually lost in fog, boating stops and many farms close. For views, come between October and May.
How many days do I need in Mahabaleshwar?
Two days is enough for most people: one for Venna Lake, the market and the viewpoints, and one for Old Mahabaleshwar and Pratapgad Fort. Add a third day if you want Panchgani or a slow morning at the strawberry farms.
Is there a railway station in Mahabaleshwar?
No. The nearest station is Satara, about 60 km away, and the nearest airport is Pune, about 120 km. From either you continue by taxi or bus up the ghat road.
When is strawberry season in Mahabaleshwar?
Roughly December to March, with January and February usually the best months for fresh fruit and farm visits. Mapro Garden's Strawberry Festival is generally held around March or April, but check the dates each year.
