What's on in Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar's calendar follows the strawberry harvest and a few religious and historical days. The biggest crowds, though, come with the long holidays, when Pune and Mumbai head for the hills.

Nothing dated is confirmed for Mahabaleshwar right now, so here is the year instead — the fixtures that come round annually, and what each one means for a visit.

The year in Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar's calendar runs through most of the year, with the busiest weeks in the clear, comfortable months and a quieter stretch in the heaviest rain. Broadly, Oct – Feb and Mar – May is when visiting is most comfortable here, and that is when the calendar is busiest — which also means accommodation is most expensive and books furthest ahead.

Most of these follow lunar calendars and move by weeks from year to year, so treat the windows below as the season rather than the date, and confirm the year’s dates before you book around one.

Strawberry season

🗓️ December–March

The plateau's farms sell strawberries, cream and preserves straight from the field.

Planning: Also the clear-air months — the monsoon here is among the wettest in the state and most viewpoints close in.

Across Maharashtra

Ganesh Chaturthi

🗓️ August–September

Maharashtra's biggest festival: clay Ganesh idols in homes and neighbourhood pandals for up to ten days, then carried in processions to the nearest river, lake or sea.

Planning: Immersion days close roads and fill the ghats and beaches; the largest crowds by far are in Mumbai and Pune.

Nationwide

Diwali

🗓️ October–November

The biggest holiday of the year — lamps, sweets, fireworks and a week of visiting family. Cities are lit up and markets stay open late.

Holi

🗓️ March

Coloured powder and water, thrown at anyone within reach, mostly through the morning.

Navratri and Dussehra

🗓️ September–October

Nine nights of fasting, music and dance, ending with Dussehra. What it looks like changes completely by region — garba in Gujarat, pandals in Bengal, processions in the south.

Eid al-Fitr

🗓️ shifts ~11 days earlier each year

The end of Ramadan. The old quarters of Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bhopal are at their best in the evenings through the preceding month, when food streets run past midnight.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal

🗓️ mid-January

The harvest turn, marked with kites in the west and north and four days of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Strawberry season, December to March

The farms around Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani pick from about December to March. Many farms let visitors walk the beds and buy fruit straight from the field, and stalls across town fill up with fresh berries. January and February are usually the best weeks.

The Strawberry Festival at Mapro Garden

Mapro Garden at Gureghar holds a Strawberry Festival, generally around March or April, with stalls, strawberry dishes and folk performances. Dates change from year to year, so check before you plan around it.

Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri, in February or March, is the big night for the Shiva temples of Old Mahabaleshwar. Expect long queues at the Mahabaleshwar temple and a busy road to the village.

Navratri at Pratapgad

The Bhavani temple inside Pratapgad Fort holds special prayers through Navratri, in September or October. It is a devotional time at the fort rather than a public show.

Shiv Pratap Din

Every November, Shiv Pratap Din at Pratapgad marks Shivaji's victory over Afzal Khan in 1659. Large crowds climb the fort, and the road from Mahabaleshwar can be slow. If you want a quiet visit, avoid that day.

Maharashtra's tourism festival

In May 2025 the state tourism body held its first three-day Maha Paryatan Utsav at Mahabaleshwar, with events around Venna Lake. Check whether it is repeated before you plan a trip around it.

Holidays that fill the town

Diwali, Christmas to New Year and the May school holidays are when hotels book up and the market is packed. Ganesh Chaturthi falls in the monsoon, and it is celebrated in town, but the rains keep it far smaller than in Pune or Mumbai.
