Local tips
Leave town at first light, as mist often fills the valley by late morning.
Combine it with Old Mahabaleshwar, which is on the same road.
Wear shoes with grip for the steps down from the car park.
Stay behind the railings; the drop is sheer and the edges are crumbly in places.
Carry a windproof layer, as it is often much windier here than in town.
Stop at Echo Point and Tiger Spring on the way down rather than rushing to the end.
Go on a weekday if you can, as weekend parking fills up fast.
The queen of the points
Arthur's Seat is the viewpoint most people drive to Mahabaleshwar to see. It stands on the western rim of the plateau, about 12 km from the market by road, past the temple village of Old Mahabaleshwar. The cliff falls away sheer, and the view opens over the deep Savitri valley towards the Konkan.
Two valleys, two landscapes
This is one of the best places to see the split between the Deccan and the Konkan. On one side the Savitri valley is steep and bare. On the other, the Jor valley is greener and gentler. On a clear morning after the monsoon you can follow the ridges for a long way.
The name
The point is named after Arthur Malet, a British officer. The local story is that he came here to look towards the Savitri, where his wife and young daughter had drowned. The story is told at every stall along the path, in slightly different forms.
The rising wind
Stallholders will tell you that light objects, such as a handkerchief or a cap, float back up when thrown off the edge, because the wind rises so strongly up the cliff. It is a well-loved local story. Do not lean over the railing to try it.
The walk and the other points
From the car park a path with steps leads down to the seat. On the way you pass Echo Point, Tiger Spring and Window Point, which are part of the same visit. Allow about an hour for the whole loop, and more if you stop for tea.
Weather
Mist usually rises out of the valley by late morning, and in the monsoon the view can vanish for days. Some access is restricted after heavy rain. October to February is when the view is most reliable.
