Best Photo Spots in Mahabaleshwar
Mahabaleshwar's best photographs are taken on the edge of the plateau, where the land drops away into the Konkan valleys. Timing matters more than gear here, because the mist decides what you can see.

Beat the mist
On most mornings the valleys below the viewpoints fill with cloud, and by late morning it often climbs up and covers the cliffs. The clearest views usually come in the first two hours after sunrise, from October to February. Summer brings haze, and from mid-June the monsoon can hide everything for days at a time.
Arthur's Seat and the rim
Arthur's Seat is the headline shot: a sheer cliff with the Savitri valley on one side and the greener Jor valley on the other. The path down to it passes Echo Point, Tiger Spring and Window Point, so give yourself an hour. Wilson Point, the highest place on the plateau, is the local sunrise spot. Bombay Point is where the town gathers for sunset.
Venna Lake
Venna Lake works best early, when the water is still and the rowboats are tied up at the jetty. Walk round to the far bank for a frame of boats with the wooded hills behind. By afternoon the bank is busy with horses, stalls and boat queues.
Pratapgad Fort
Pratapgad is about 24 km away, down the ghat road towards the Konkan. From the upper fort the ramparts run along the ridge with the valley below, and the bronze statue of Shivaji on horseback makes a strong subject against the sky.
Old Mahabaleshwar
The dark stone Mahabaleshwar temple and the Panchganga shrine sit in a small village about 7 km from the market. Shoot the exteriors and the courtyards. Treat the sanctums as places of prayer and ask before taking any photo inside.
Mapro Garden
At Mapro Garden, get low among the strawberry beds in the winter months, when the plants carry fruit. Outside the season the garden café and produce stalls are the main subjects.
Safety at the edge
Stay behind the railings. The cliff edges are unfenced in places and wet laterite is slippery. In the monsoon, follow any barriers or closures, even if others ignore them.
Questions
Mahabaleshwar — FAQ
Where is the best sunrise in Mahabaleshwar?
Wilson Point, the highest spot on the plateau, is the usual sunrise viewpoint. Go on a clear morning between October and February and arrive before first light.
Where do people watch sunset in Mahabaleshwar?
Bombay Point is the popular sunset viewpoint and gets very crowded in the evening. Arrive early if you want a place at the front.
Can I take photos at the viewpoints in the monsoon?
You can try, but fog often hides the valleys completely from June to September, and some points are restricted after heavy rain. Waterfalls and green slopes are the better subjects then.
Can I take photos inside the Old Mahabaleshwar temple?
Photography inside the sanctum is usually not welcome. Take your photos of the stone exterior and the courtyard, and ask the temple staff before shooting anything inside.
