Local tips
Come in the morning on a weekday to avoid the weekend queues.
Visit between December and March if you want to see fruit on the plants.
Order at the counter first, then find a table, as seats go fast.
Buy bottled crushes and jams here on your way out, so you do not carry them all trip.
Stop on the drive between Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar rather than making a separate trip.
Keep children close in the car park, which is busy with cars turning.
Check the Strawberry Festival dates each year, as they move.
Strawberries on the Panchgani road
Mapro Garden is the visitor garden of Mapro, a food company founded in the area in 1959. It is in the village of Gureghar on the road between Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar, so most people stop on the way in or out of town. Entry is free, and it is one of the most popular stops on the plateau.
What is there
The garden has strawberry beds, a flower and plant section and play areas for children. The café serves strawberries and cream, shakes, sandwiches and pizzas, and the shop sells the company's crushes, syrups, jams and chocolates. Visitors can also see the chocolate-making area. It is a food stop more than a garden, so come hungry.
Strawberry country
Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani grow about 85 per cent of India's strawberries, and the Mahabaleshwar strawberry has had a GI tag since 2010. The beds here, and the farms along the road, carry fruit from about December to March. Outside those months the beds are green or bare, and the bottled products take over.
The Strawberry Festival
Mapro holds a Strawberry Festival here, generally around March or April. It brings extra stalls, strawberry dishes and folk performances. The dates change each year, so check before you plan around it.
Planning your stop
The café and shop get very busy from late morning on weekends, with queues at the counters and a full car park. An early visit on a weekday is far calmer. Allow about an hour. In the monsoon the strawberry beds are out of season, but the café and shop are useful for a warm break.
