Good to know

Local tips

Come soon after opening for a still lake and no queue at the boat counter.

Pick a row boat over a pedal boat if you want the quieter experience.

Walk to the far bank, away from the jetty, for the calmest stretch of water.

Agree the length and price of a horse ride before you get on.

Keep snacks covered near the water, where monkeys and dogs hang around the stalls.

Carry a light layer for the evening, as it gets cool quickly once the sun drops.

In the monsoon, check that boating is running before you drive over.

The lake by the market

Venna Lake is a man-made lake from the colonial period, about 2 km from Mahabaleshwar's main market on the road towards Panchgani. Trees and low wooded hills ring the water, and it is the one place almost every visitor to the town passes through. It is also the easiest outing here for families, because it needs no climbing and no long drive.

On the water

Row boats and pedal boats go out from the jetty, and boating usually runs only until sunset. Tickets are sold at the counter by the jetty, and queues build on weekends and holidays. A slow row on a still morning is the calmest way to see the lake.

Around the bank

Horse rides wait along the road side, and there are small rides for children. Stalls sell strawberries and cream, roasted corn, bhel and hot snacks. The bank gets noisy by mid-afternoon, especially from Friday to Sunday. If you want quiet, walk towards the far side, away from the jetty.

Rain and the lake

In the monsoon the lake fills and sometimes overflows, and boating is often stopped for safety. The walk round the water is still pleasant in a break in the rain, with mist hanging over the hills. From October the boats are back and the water is at its fullest.

Fitting it in

The lake is on the way in from Panchgani and Mapro Garden, so many people stop on arrival. Others come back in the evening, after the viewpoints. An hour is enough unless you plan a long row.
