Local tips
Start early, as the climb is easier before the midday sun.
Carry water; the stalls are at the base, not on the way up.
Wear shoes with grip, since the stone steps are worn smooth in places.
Take a travel sickness tablet if bends bother you, as the ghat road winds a lot.
Hire a local guide at the base if you want the full story of 1659.
Remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and knees at the Bhavani temple.
Avoid Shiv Pratap Din in November if you want a quiet visit.
Shivaji's fort above the Konkan
Pratapgad stands on a hill at about 1,080 m, around 24 km west of Mahabaleshwar, on the road that drops down towards Poladpur and the Konkan. Shivaji had it built in 1656 by his minister Moropant Trimbak Pingle to guard the passes between the coast and the plateau. It is one of the best-known forts in Maharashtra.
November 1659
On 10 November 1659, below these walls, Shivaji met Afzal Khan, a general of the Bijapur Sultanate, in a meeting that ended with Afzal Khan's death. The battle that followed was the first major test of Shivaji's army. The story is told constantly on the fort, and a local guide will tell it with feeling.
Inside the fort
The fort has a lower and an upper part. The lower fort holds the main gate and a temple to the goddess Bhavani from Shivaji's time, with an eight-armed image. The upper fort has more shrines, watchtowers, bastions and a bronze statue of Shivaji on horseback, unveiled by Jawaharlal Nehru on 30 November 1957.
The climb
From the car park you climb several hundred stone steps, about 450 by most counts. They are mostly easy, with a few steep sections. Carry water, since shade is patchy, and go slowly on the way down.
Getting there
A taxi from Mahabaleshwar takes about an hour each way on a ghat road with many bends. Stalls at the base sell tea, snacks and souvenirs. Half a day is enough for the drive, the climb and a walk round the walls.
Weather
October to February gives the clearest views over the valleys. In the monsoon the fort is often in cloud and the steps are slippery, and on Shiv Pratap Din in November the fort is packed.
