Best Month to Visit Maheshwar

October and November

The rains are over, the river is full and the banks are still green. October days are hot, but November is pleasant. Nimar Utsav, a festival of folk music and dance on the ghats, is usually held around Kartik Purnima in November.

December to February

These are the coolest and most comfortable months, with sunny days and cool mornings and evenings. It is the best time for sunrise on the ghats and long boat rides. Narmada Jayanti usually falls in January or February, and Mahashivratri in February or March, and both bring large crowds of pilgrims.

March

Days warm up quickly, but mornings are still pleasant, and it is a good month for a quieter trip before the heat sets in. Mahashivratri sometimes falls in early March, so check the date.

April to June

This is the hottest part of the year, with afternoons often above 40 °C. Visit the ghats at sunrise and after sunset, rest indoors in the afternoon and drink plenty of water. Ahilyabai Holkar's birth anniversary on 31 May is marked with a palanquin procession from the Rajwada.

July to September

The monsoon brings rain, humidity and a fast, rising river. The ghats and green banks look dramatic, but the lower steps can go under water after heavy rain, and boat rides may be suspended. Check weather and river updates before you travel.

When Is Maheshwar Most Crowded?

Maheshwar is busiest at Mahashivratri, when pilgrims crowd the ghats to bathe in the Narmada, and during Narmada Jayanti and Nimar Utsav. Winter weekends and long holidays often bring day-trippers from Indore.

For a quieter trip, come on a weekday between November and February and explore the ghats early in the morning.
